I love mock trial because it’s law, it’s theatre, and it’s a little bit of the NFL combined all rolled into one. I recently judged high school students competing in the Texas mock trial competition, and I was simply floored by how talented and intelligent every single student was.  I competed in mock trial competitions throughout law school in courtrooms from Seattle to Oklahoma City to New York City, and I fully believe many of the high school teams I observed would not only hold their own in a law school competition but could also win!  Their pacing, cadence, and comfort with public speaking rivaled that of hardcore theatre students.  The students still have much to learn in college and law school, but I believe there are some things you just can’t teach—length to a basketball player, pure speed a running back, and moxie to a litigator.  You either have it or you don’t.  And let me tell you: the students in the Texas mock trial competition, they have it.
